HOMEWORK Due wed 11/2

For this week's blog home work I would like you to do so research on an artist from the following list (choose 1)

John T. Biggers

Frida Kahlo

Laylah Ali

Takashi Murakami

Once you have learned more about the artist write a response to their art. Try to use what we have learned so far to get the meaning of a work (it will be helpful to upload an image to your post) and give a personal response. Remember to prove all of your claims with physical descriptions of the work.

Extra Credit, Art fair

Texas Contemporary
My visit to the art fair was nothing I've ever expected. My drive was long and when I got there it was hard to find free parking. Once I got there, it dint seem to be many people there. They greeted me and check my free ticket at the entrance, where they also gave me a fair guide. When I went in there was lots of people inside. I started looking around and it amazed me of all the art work that was around me. There was paintings, monitors, installations, statues, all there, all kinds. I loved most of the work there. I got a little intimidated because all of the artist were there talking to people that looked at their art. I was nervous that someone would ask for my opinion because I wouldn't know what to say or how to critic art? I was on a time limit, and I had to leave after an hour. it was not enough time to enjoy the whole experience. One of my favorite pieces there was one called "The green Dress". I hope I can attend more art fairs, to learn more about all kinds of art.

Modern Art 3

I really enjoy Matthew Collings videos about modern art. He breaks it down to show you different examples of artist and give you a small biography of them. I enjoy most the art shown on this video, but I wasn't a big fan of Basquiat. I don't see ANY beauty at all, on his paintings. Maybe my mind is not open enough to see through his gruesome beauty. My favorite art on this video was Gary Hume, his work was very interesting and wasn't straight to the point like Alex Katz or Matisse.

1. Why does Oliski paints at night?
2. Do you think Basquiat can paint the same without the influence of drugs?
3. What does it mean to Alex Katz to paint Elegant?
4. What religion was Matisse?
5. Why do we find it so hard to see the beauty on some modern art like Basquiat work?

Modern Art Beauty

After watching the video, I learn that the definition of art beauty is more than a simple meaning of nice shaped and colors, but it is about the perfection, the feelings, the creativeness, and the time at which the art piece is created, etc. There is not a true definition for art beauty, so there are always varieties of beauties in variety ways of accepting the arts. I like the night sky painting of Olitski: they are the mixture of real sky and abstractions which is made by using his own unique. I am not really attractive to other paintings that are shown in the video, but thanks to them I could understand more about the beauty of modern art.

1. What make Olitski’s paintings unique?

2. Why is Olitski said to be the greatest painter alives?

3. Why does Ofili use animal dung to express his art beauty?

4. What makes Alex Katz paintings elegant?

5. What is the only subject that Elizabeth Peyton paints?

Modern Art Ep. 3

What I concluded from the video is that to everyone beauty takes on different meanings, ideas, and even feelings. The artist discussed in the video wanted people to be able to find their own beauty, their own idea of what beauty is or could be. This, I would agree takes on a different approach to the idea of "beauty being in the eye of the beholder". I even noticed that Chris Ofili was mentioned in the video, because he is a good example of a modern artist finding beauty, in what some would believe/say, is inappropriate of or even offensive. I conclude that it all bowls down to what beauty means to the individual.

1. What side of the modern art world is the "Blue Nude" apart of?
2. What artist is responsible for the painting "Blue Nude", that is said to stand for beauty itself?
3. What did said artist want his art to be like?
4. What did Patrick Heron say you shouldn't dwell on when creating/producing this particular brand of artwork?
5. What did Chris Ofili use to create most of his artwork?

Modern Art Video

'Modern Art' video cleared a lot of questions about what Modern Art really stands out and defined beauty with a new vision . It explained that beauty can be found in anything as long as the viewer appreciates it . Beauty is in the eye of the beholder came true after watching this video . Julie Olitski was one of the favorite artists I had in this video . His technique for creating art was interesting and breathtaking . He really created new form of art and revived how art should be traditionally created. Another artist I liked was Ofili and how he creates his art with different objects .
1) What made Chris Ofili challenge the definition of beauty ?
2) What really is Modern Art and what differentiated it from others to be called Modern ?
3) What inspired Elizabeth Peyton to paint angelic and feminine type of paintings ?
4) Who defines weather an art is beautiful or not and on what basis ?
5) Why did Peyton only opt to paint celebrities ?

Modern Art Ep. 3 (Homework)

Art and the beauty of it, is truly in the eyes of the beholder in my opinion. I liked how Henri Matise found art beauty in painting the human body. The human body is very extraordinary and beautiful and has great value in beautiful art. Henri Matise's 'Blue Nude' really seemed ahead of his time, if I didn't know when the painting was created I would have thought it was a very recent painting. The "Blue Nude" painting was nice because of the flow and smoothness of it. Patrick Heron's painting really didn't catch my eye but I did appreciate his loose and free lines through out his art. Julie Olitski's art was very bizarre and unique to me. The way Olitski threw his paint on the canvas was very free and almost kind of reminded me of a child on a playground having fun in the sand pitts and creating everything the eye could see around them. I would have never thought or took actor Dennis Hopper as an art collector, I found that kinda of funny but interesting because you could tell he appreciated art and knew a lot about it. Elizabeth Peyton art was nice and I liked how her colors blended together in her paintings. Alex katz paintings are very realistic and elegant. Katz painting have a very fresh and cool look to them. For some reason Katz paintings reminded me of the 1980's but not really sure why.

Questions:
1. Why did Henri Matise find fascination in painting the human body?
2. Why did Chris Ofili choose elephant dung so much to express his art?
3. Why did Patrick Heron become an art critic?
4. Did Jules Olitski try to do any other art form besides painting?
5. Why did Alex Katz like to paint in a realism kind of way?

modern3

This video gave me a new outlook on what art really could be I mean I love controvesy so Olifi's art was very breathtaking to me. I think that people need to look at what art can be and what makes art special to some people.
1. why did Olfiti only use controversy in most of his paintings?
2. Why did he put so much emotion into his work?
3. Why was the artist not talking very much in the interview?
4.Why did Oliti only paint black people?
5. What is the true definition of MODERN ART?

modern art 3

Modern art beauty is based on what it was art in the past. Now days artist paint, draw, make sculpture thinking more on what they see and what they want us to see, feel, and think. Artist try to make modern art inspired in how art was before and the beauty behind it. I think modern art is not a beauty, I think modern art is more what the artist feels, thinks, and sees. They want us to seethe world the see with out even if the work they made is ugly for us, but beautiful for them.

Questions:
1) Why did Chirs Ofili was inspired in pornography to do his work?
2) How did Jules Olitskit invented the spray in the 66?
3) Was Michael Basquat inspired by Picasso work?
4) What inspired Elizabeth Peyton only to paint any stars?
5) What is elgant paint mean to Alex Katz?

"Modern Art: Episode 3"

This video really helped me understand what people mean when they say "modern art". Modern art is all about beauty, but not the beauty that we are used to, this is a more challenging kind of beauty; a beauty that we have to look for. In this episode of modern art they showed an artist named Henri Matisse, he is considered a modern artist, not only because his pictures are some of the most elegant, but because they are truly beautiful and delicate. Quite the opposite of artist Chris Ofili, which often likes to challenge the eye of the viewer by presenting a more distorted kind of beauty. This video also showed an artist named Jules Olitski, I personally, had never heard of him. He ended up being my favorite artist out of all the artist they presented. He was a master of the formalism movement, and was considered at one point the "greatest painter alive". He truly appreciates the beauty that nature offers, which has allowed him to paint mind-blowing landscapes. They also talked about Elizabeth Peyton, she mainly paints famous people. To me she is a modern artist, because of the way she portrayed celebrities. Her paintings tend to have some sort of delicate, "angelic and feminine" kind of beauty.
Questions:
1.Why would Elizabeth Peyton paint "angelic, feminine" beauty?
2.Why Jean Michel Basquiat wouldn't talk much during interviews?
3. Why would Chris Ofili challenge the idea of what "beautiful" is?
4.Why would Elizabeth Peyton only paint celebrities?
5. How have these artist define the term "modern art"?

John T. Biggers Research

(1924-2001) John T. Biggers was a African American Artist. He was born in Gastonia, North Caralina. As a child he attended Lincoln Academy and grew and met this mentor Victor Lowenfield. He advised Biggers to study paintings in the African culture. John T. Biggers then layed hands on Texas southern in 1949 and was know to be called "carncas master of the human condition". His most famous art work was called the "upper room". I really thought the meaning of his art was very strong. It certainly represents the African American effort in the past. Most but not least, shows the faith of strong black women and how it integrates African American families of this day. This great African American was the father of 27 public art paintings that took place at Texas southern university, Penn State, Hampton University and Dallas.

Ep. 3 Modern Art

I believe art is beautiful if your eyes are interested from whats being reflected off the framework.

1. Why does Chris Oflie use elephant dung for art ? ( no where near beautiful)
2. Why does modern art want you to see more than whats being showed on the frame ?
3. Why does Gary Hum uses a image of that in particular kid to describe how Jesus was a poor boy?
4.Why does modern art sometime have a problem being beautiful to People eyes ?
5.Why does Basquat art have a jokey appearance ?

Modern Art ep. 3

Personally, I think Jules Olitski's art is very interesting, although I am not a big fan of abstract art. What I saw interesting on his art is the one technique he uses to create some of his work. I liked how he used his hands to mix the paint on the canvas and how the texture was created with such technique.

1. Why Jules painted many circular figures or shapes?
2. Why was he considered one of the greatest living painters?
3. Why did he lived away from civilization?
4. Why was he so abstract on his paintings?

"Beauty in Art"

As of today, modern art is completely out of purpose. Modern art is beauty, and the beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Anything you see or think can or is beautiful as long as you give it a reason why it is. I learned a lot about modern art in this videos and it made me appreciate art even more. I now understand why artist draw the stuff they draw. They see the world in a way some people do not see it, and that makes us see and appreciate the beauty of the world. For example, Chris Ofili incorporates the elephant dungs, uses ponography and wallpaper to stimulate the eye for beautifulness. Henry Matis also made western tradition with non-western tradition for something new. He stands for akwardness and oddness turning beauty one thing after another one. Another artist that caught my attention was Julie Olitski. He is the greatest painter alive and was the inventor of the spray painter in 1966. He used formalism, which was and idea about beauty, but beauty reduced to colors and flatness. Olitski was a monster on both colors and flatness, and everyone called him the cutting age. Modern art is not about destroying the loveliness of the past but about re-eventing it to make it fit the present.

Questions:
1. Why did Ofili incorporated elephant dung in the art? Why could it not be any other animals dung?
2. Olitski only paints at night, why is that?
3. What made Dennis Hopper collect pop art?
4. Why does Elizabeth Peyton only paints stars?
5. Alex Katz paints elegant art. Why elegant?

10/2 Homework-Frida Kahlo

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.pbs.org/weta/fridakahlo/images/works_2fridas.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.pbs.org/weta/fridakahlo/worksofart/index.html&h=372&w=387&sz=25&tbnid=a1pNqo9RH8S3ZM:&tbnh=94&tbnw=98&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dfrida%2Bkahlo%2Bpaintings%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=frida+kahlo+paintings&docid=_B3g5DuHV0pxNM&sa=X&ei=luOlTqeRN8jngQfs6um7BQ&ved=0CEEQ9QEwAA&dur=5585

Frida Kahlo' paintings were mostly self-portraits and still life, were deliberately native, and filled with the colors and form of the Mexican folk art. She was married to the Mexican Muralist Diego Rivera for 20 years. Their stormy , passionate relationship survived infedelities, the pressures of careers, divorce, remarriage, Frida's bisexual affairs, her poor health and her inability to have children.
On this painting Frida reveals what could had been a truth about her life, the truth of been a bisexual person, though she was married. The painting shows two Fridas sitting on what seems to be a stool, holding eachother's hand, and their heart connected with an artery (that's what I see). I think she expressed her bisexuality on this painting, although back in that time when Frida painted it, it was'nt that common to show one's bisexuality specially in a country of "machistas" or machos. I think she was very brave of doing it.
